My friends told me multiple times to change because the character was shining so bright and I was always the first one to get spotted and targeted by enemies. Milan: In the beginning I was playing as RATS (Reinforced Advanced Tactical Scientist) because no-one else was using the character.

By chance he obtained female animations, but because he is a chaotic android created by Dr Simon as his first project during his university studies, I decided not to fix it! Melbin is a special, stupid, but original bloke. So Melbin is a community-powered character in the game.
I wrote a bunch of lines and asked him to record them for the game, and the result was just great! He was quite a chaotic player with very special phrases, which was a great fit for Shielder! Then we needed some voiceover for Melbin, so we asked the community YouTuber Dee Warraich - he used to comment on the game on an almost daily basis, and many players knew his distinctive voice. Milan told me about a player who was no longer active called Melbin. We found an android called Shielder - he had a shield in the first game - and invited the community to help with his background. I got together with Milan to identify a few potential candidates from the original Shadowgun game. Melbin wasn’t in the game from the beginning, but people wanted new assets including a new character. Michal: My favourite character? That’s an easy one - it’s Melbin. Milan: There were also a few real-life couples in SGDZ. He only lives around 2000km from my home :) I’m still considering a visit to one clan leader who helped me identify many cheaters and find lots of bugs. Michal: I’ve made several very close friends in the SGDZ community, but I’ve only met one of them face to face and it was great. For a while ZoneBrothers were one of the best, and now the clan is more of a group of friends who happen to play the same game every now and then.
Most of the time we just spam our clan chat with pointless banter and memes, but a lot of the guys have been members for a year or more so a lot of more personal stuff gets discussed as well. Milan: How many hours have I put into SGDZ? I can’t really tell, I guess it’s at least 1500 hours, not counting the hundreds of hours I’ve spent on ComZone as well. Thanks to this cooperation I made many new friends in the community, and we really appreciated their help. Many clan leaders were members of our community police. We worked incognito, with up to 30 members constantly searching for cheaters, recording suspicious behaviour, and reporting bugs. Together we established the Community Police. I couldn’t handle it alone so I contacted several community leaders and asked them to put me in contact with some respected and trustworthy players.
The game was very prone to hacking and a little buggy at the time, so the cheaters were able to do stuff like flying, teleporting, killing teammates, and so on. The cheaters hit the game very hard at one point and were everywhere. Michal: My first direct contact with the community was when I started working on our anti-cheat system. Deadzone was rather simple so it didn’t feel like I needed to study it for months to become good at it and have some fun. At first I sucked really badly, but I spent a whole day playing until I made it to first place.

I was looking for some free shooter and SGDZ looked the most promising. Milan: I first played the game around winter 2012. That’s how I became Game Director and was running the game from that moment until the very end. We saw that it still had the potential to keep running for several more years.

After a few years, I became dedicated to Deadzone full time. My first task was designing and developing the matchmaking technology. Michal: I joined MFG (MADFINGER Games) and started working on the project about a year before it went out to the public for Beta testing. I was in the Beta testing team for three years, made some maps for SGDZ, and started Comzone … I was also involved in some SGDZ tournaments like the World Cup, and I’m also part of the SGDZ police.

For some years now I’ve been an admin for the official Shadowgun Community on Facebook and made a tutorial series for SGDZ beginners on YouTube. Milan Belohlavek: Well, I’m Milan, known in-game as milan8888 and Ibuprofen from the ZoneBrothers clan. Basically I did a little bit of everything. Then I was hunting cheaters, establishing community police and coordinating their actions. Besides programming, I was preparing updates, cooperating with the community on content (including Comzone), and maintaining servers. At MADFINGER Games I started as a network programmer and later became a game director. Michal Blažek: I’m Michal, and I’ve been involved with Deadzone for many years now.
